The Subtropical Fruit Crops program works closely with growers (old and new) on a wide range of issues affecting mostly avocados and citrus. Dr. Gary Bender has been the Subtropical Fruits Advisor in San Diego since 1985 and has conducted research to help growers with such issues as irrigation requirements for avocado and citrus, fertility projects, canopy management, and rootstocks and insect and mite control. He has also helped develop the blueberry industry in San Diego County with variety trials and irrigation trials. He has also done research projects on some of the minor subtropical fruits, which show promise commercially, including cherimoya, litchi, carambola and pitahaya (dragon fruit).
