In the midst of historic drought, California’s academic institutions serve as a tremendous resource both in offering everything from near-term management advice to farmers and ranchers to the innovative work being carried out by researchers on a vast array of issues from drought resistant crops to snow sensors to climate change.

Invasive Plants

The Invasive Plants program is responsible for extension research and outreach in four southern California Counties (San Diego, Riverside, Imperial, and San Bernardino). Dr. Chris McDonald, Inland and Desert Natural Resources Advisor, works with various land owners/land managers of public and private properties with focus on non-native plants that have invaded natural habitats. His research includes the biology and ecology of invasive plants species, educational methodologies, and natural resource policy issues related to weeds of natural areas.

Coastal Resources

The Coastal Resources Program provides science-based information through applied research and informal education programs to people who make and influence decisions on the sustainability of coastal communities, ecosystems and resources. The program Advisor is Ms. Leigh Taylor Johnson who is part of the statewide, Cooperative Extension network of University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources that is sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture, State of California and participating County governments.

Invasive Tree Pests - Urban and Forests

The threat and impact of invasive tree insects and diseases is an on-going reality in San Diego County. These tree pests cause environmental, economic and in some cases, public safety challenges and can effect multiple landscapes, ownerships, and industries. UCCE San Diego staff work collaboratively with University and public/private cooperators to deliver education and outreach programming to various public and private land owners/land managers and industry professionals about invasive insects and diseases impacting trees in our urban and natural forests.
